 Since their Daddy (Harry)and Papa (Tom) speak the language of snakes, it seemed appropriate to call the children collectively 'Hatchlings" after the name used for baby snakes.

Ophion is the oldest. He was sorted into Slytherin and has the potential to become the finest Dark wizard since - well, since Lord Voldemort. That is, if he can curb his penchant for romance. He's written reams of really bad love poetry. His favorite spell is apparently the Contraceptive charm. He's romanced and dropped so many students that Tom and Harry have had to give him The Talk about offending pure-bred families by taking up with their cherished daughters and sons and unceremoniously dumping them. If he doesn't cause any major feuds and can learn to control his hormones, this is one formidable wizard in the works.
Tom's favorite son - and the one he finds most infuriating.

Dillon is a year or two younger and was Sorted into Ravenclaw. Dark, handsome, slightly arrogant, incredibly smart and athletic, he could be the reincarnation of Sirius Black. His excellent grades come effortlessly, his Quidditch playing is the stuff of which House championships are made. He single-handedly started the Hogwarts Tarrochi craze and is, naturally, an excellent player. His temper ignites quickly and he has a penchant for dueling in the halls and isn't above jinxing someone unawares. His list of detentions is as long as his Quidditch and Tarrochi victories. Harry's favorite son - and the one who makes him crazy.

Ethelinda and Ariel are next youngest in age. Twins, they were both Sorted into Gryffindor. Their quick wits and gifts for mischief will earn them reputations to eclipse those of the Marauders, the Weasley Twins and the Trio. With two doting fathers, the household revolves around their beloved girls.

Basil is developmentally disabled and his magical skills are nearly zilch. He looks very much like Tom and Harry, but he's very innocent and sees the world in a very different way from the rest of the children. Basil comes into the family when the other kids are older. The girls adore their little brother, and the older boys enjoy teaching him all the right things to annoy Harry and Tom. Poor Tom had just begun to relax at the realization that the kids have finally gotten old enough to be interesting to him, and then Harry brought home a younger one, and practically a Squib at that. Basil is definitely a challenge for Tom's evolving ability to love.

The way I see it, it was at least a couple years into the relationship before Harry brought up the subject of children. Tom made it very clear that any children Harry brought home would be Harry's children, and Harry's responsibility, and made Harry well aware that he considered it an intrusion into their relationship. It was sort of like parents when a child wants a puppy. Harry listened politely, and thanked him for his honesty, and didn't make any more overtures because of Tom's obvious hostility to the idea.

Then, two of Tom's friends perished in a terrible accident. He had taken on the role of godfather purely as a sign of favour to alchemists he thought of very highly - he never thought he would be called upon to act in that position, yet, all of a sudden, there was a baby on his doorstep, so to speak. Tom is the kind of person to whom a child would be uninteresting until he reached the age at which he could carry on a conversation, so he was at a complete loss. Yet, he keenly felt that he had a duty, and his willingness to keep his word was under scrutiny. Fortunately, Harry jumped right in and assumed the parental role, and Tom was very, very grateful.

Ophion not only made his relationship with Harry grow in new ways, but Tom even began to feel some affection for the child who brought about the change.

That's when Harry made the case for Dillon. He could be Ophion's friend as they grew up together. And it's not like there wasn't room at the mansion, and two couldn't be any more bother than one...And again, Tom resolved not to get involved, and again, he eventually became attached to the little critter.

A few years went by, and Ethelinda and Ariel came along. Tom was adamant - no more! Whyever would Harry want girls? Then one day, he went to meet Harry for lunch at the Foundation, and Harry artfully arranged for him to see them. As they looked up at Tom with wide brown eyes, Harry explained that he couldn't find a family for them, and Tom was reminded that not only had he and Harry been unwanted orphans, but that Merope had been abandoned. That did it. The girls came to live with them. And Tom became even more attached to them them to the boys.

As the children grew up, Tom reevaluated his earlier thoughts about biological inheritance, since the children had grown up so much like him and Harry. He felt they were truly their heirs, especially since the children were so devoted to them. In this scenario, I can imagine that he might eventually be a rather good grandfather...
